Mike’s second book with Peterloo Poets ranging from the Himalayas (Hermit – Shingo La / Khumbu Glacier Nightfall) to the Yorkshire Dales (Lear In Dentdale / Haytime). Less autobiographical than Daddy Edgar’s Pools with more sense of form this is a selection of finely crafted and lyrical pieces.
The poem below follows on from another Dales poem, Village Wedding and comes from the almost 50 yrs that Mike has had a home in the Yorkshire Dales
After the Wedding
Honeymoon gone she’ll stand on silent nights
Watching her breath flower in the cold yard-light
As falling stars scratch the lampblack sky
And by the stove, lapped in sacks, dry
And warm, a coddled sick lamb breathes
Soft milky bubbles on the rug, and she sees
The years ahead stretch farther
And more curious than the questioning stars.
