I stayed at the Lion in May this year travelling from Sheffield to see Clare Teal at the Vic in Settle.
It was a great evening at the Vic and had a chat to her as she was staying in the same pub.
I got back to the Lion and low and behold Mike was in there performing with other local musicians.
I will go back one day just to see him and stay overnight as I really enjoyed hearing him play his mandolin with some great folk songs to boot.
It was a great double whammy for me, I’m sure Mike’s concerts are different from his get tog ether’s in the Lion but it made an enjoyable evening even more special.
We always have a bit of craic playing in the Lion – great little pub. We’ve even made a CD!
I lived at, 9 Enver (ELm) Rd. from 1941, MY sister was your age. WE emegrated to Australia in 1966. we have been discussing our childhood and environs ever since, It was wonderful finding your book “Crumpsall Kid” you lived at the edge of our lives and we recognise so much of what you write, Brian McCorket used to come to our house, and he used to whistle where ever he went. I used to lie awake at night waiting for my father to com home (he was a taxi driver) and I used to hear Brian whistling his way home, Thank you for your book. You confirmed so much of what we knew of that special place, Crumsall.
Brian was a great lad – a bit older than me. Always cheerful and really kind to people. It was a special place.
Hi Mike how can we get your backing music for Accrington Pals, we want to perform it at a charity event here in Normandy in honour of 100yrs since end of Ww1. From a Lancashire couple xx

Chanced upon your website Mike looking for comic monologues to read to my young students. It brought back lovely memories of a concert in Nottingham back in the 70s. In particular loved to come across your poetry again [I teach the stuff] , especially the ‘Bring on..’ poem and your ‘war’ poetry. I have a great uncle buried just opposite the ‘Pals’ in Serre no 1 and your stuff, as always, manages to say what I feel.Thanks again for the joy, the comfort and the insight. Thanks to you, Napoleon has stayed away from my hometown!

Thank you for your song, The Accrington Pals. I think of it every working day, as I walk past the stained glass windows taken from the War Memorial Wing of the Blackburn Royal Infirmary. They are mounted now in the entrance to the Royal Blackburn Hospital, testament to the town’s that sent men & boys to join the Accy Pals.
