Im a ten pound pommy kid who was transported to Australia in 1960.I was hitch hiking around England in 1975 looking for my roots.A girl from Leeds who I met on the trip over took me to your show that was on a clubby sort of barge in York.That night was a highlight of the whole trip.I have never forgotten the kindness and consideration of the girl and her friends or of having laughed so much my face hurt at your show.
I am a bit of a folkie myself and wrote a song about Linda (the girl) when I was reminiscing a few years ago such was the fondness that I hold that brief episode.You are mentioned in the song along with the 3 peaks race that we watched from a pub the following day though I am amazed I remember anything or even woke up.Just thought Id let you know what your reach has been.

Great story Ian and though it may seem strange I remember that barge in the river in York and still remember that night. Happy days – I’m living in 3 Peaks country now and my bro in law who’s coming up for a beer this weekend has run the 3 Peaks several times. I usually mind his beer for him.

Aston Uni caving club met you in the Helwith Bridge Inn many years ago and pursuaded you to join a local caving club. We lent you a biro to sign up and “Mike Hardings pen” remained a club story for years. I have photos of the pen and in the photos is Rick Stanton , who made rhe news getting that football team out of the Thai cave.
Theres got to be a poem in there somewhere !

Always been a big fan of Mike since I saw him on a stuffed Alsatian on Top of The Pops, because it looked like my Dog Tina. Got me into Uncle Joes Mint Balls when I was a teenager and had to spend my 20’s in a rehab clinic in Fleetwood ( that’s when I got hooked on Fishman’s friends). I now cant go anywhere near a lozenge. One of my closest friends who got me into folk music used to let me listen to his reel to reel tapes of Mikes early stuff, Roger Wright was a big enthusiast of Mike and had met him on may occasions and booked him when he ran a folk club in Warrington in the early 70’s – Roger has since gone to the big Folk club in the sky but I have inherited his sandals and beard. I always dreamed of seeing Mike perform live and I was lucky enough to see him at the Oldham coliseum on his last tour and met him in the bar afterwards, still say it was the best 13 quid I’d spent.
